Commonwealth Games 2026: India’s Top Medal Contenders and Predicted Medal Tally

3

India is expected to win fewer medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow than the 61 it claimed in Birmingham four years ago, largely because the Games feature only 10 sports this time. However, the country remains a strong contender in athletics, boxing, weightlifting, judo, lawn bowls and para sports.

Athletics (Expected: 5–6 medals)
India has fielded a 32-member athletics squad competing across 22 events. While track medals may be difficult, the country is expected to shine in field events. Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra leads India’s medal hopes in the men’s javelin throw despite facing a world-class lineup that includes Arshad Nadeem, Keshorn Walcott, Anderson Peters, Julius Yego and Rumesh Pathirage.

India also has strong prospects in the jumping events, with Sarvesh Kushare and Tejaswin Shankar in the high jump, Sreeshankar Murali and Lokesh Satyanathan in the long jump, and Selva Prabhu and Praveen Chithravel in the triple jump. Distance runners Parul Chaudhary and Gulveer Singh could also spring a surprise if they produce standout performances.

Boxing (Expected: 8–10 medals)
India is among the favourites in boxing, led by reigning world champion Jaismine Lamboria and Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain. With relatively modest competition across the Commonwealth nations, India is expected to secure around eight medals, with the tally potentially reaching double digits.

Women boxers Sakshi Chaudhary (51kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg) and Jaismine Lamboria (57kg) enter the competition as strong gold-medal contenders, while several others are also expected to challenge for podium finishes.

Weightlifting (Expected: 6–7 medals)
Tokyo Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu heads India’s 12-member weightlifting team and remains the country’s strongest gold-medal prospect. Lifters Gyaneshwari Devi, Ajaya Babu and Raja Muthupandi are also expected to contribute to India’s medal tally. After winning 10 medals in Birmingham, India is projected to claim six or seven medals this time.

Judo (Expected: 4 medals)
India will rely on Tulika Maan and Asmita Dey as its leading medal hopes, while Inunganbi Takhellambam and Ishroop Narang are also expected to challenge strongly. Having won three medals in 2022, India will aim to improve its performance in Glasgow.

Lawn Bowls (Expected: 1 medal)
Although only singles and doubles events are being held this time, India still has a realistic chance of winning one medal thanks to the experience of several players who were part of the historic medal-winning campaign in Birmingham.

Para Sports (Expected: 5 medals)
India is also expected to perform well in para events, with an estimated three medals in para athletics and two in para powerlifting.

Overall, despite a reduced competition programme limiting the total medal count, India is expected to remain among the leading nations at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, with boxing, athletics and weightlifting likely to contribute the bulk of the medals.
