Independence Day advisory: Reach Delhi stations early; parcel services halted at 5 terminals

Northern Railway has advised passengers travelling from Delhi to reach railway stations well in advance ahead of Independence Day on August 15, as security checks are being intensified and passenger movement is expected to increase.

Security arrangements at railway stations across Delhi will be tightened from August 13 to 16, Northern Railway said in a passenger advisory. Travellers have been urged to plan their journeys accordingly, arrive early and cooperate with security personnel.

Delhi has more than 40 railway stations, including major terminals such as New Delhi, Old Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Anand Vihar Terminal, Delhi Sarai Rohilla and Delhi Safdarjung.

Parcel services suspended at five stations

As part of the heightened security measures, parcel booking and handling services will remain suspended at five major Delhi stations from August 12 to 15.

The restriction will cover New Delhi, Delhi Junction, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Anand Vihar Terminal and Delhi Sarai Rohilla stations.

A senior railway official said all inward and outward parcel traffic would be prohibited at these stations during the period, including leased second-class luggage rack coaches, parcel vans and demand parcel vans.

Parcel warehouses and platforms will also be kept clear of packages and packing material.

Passengers will continue to be allowed to carry personal luggage in passenger coaches. Registered newspapers and magazines, however, can still be booked after completing the required commercial formalities and security checks.

The restrictions will apply not only to trains originating in Delhi but also to trains arriving from other railway zones and divisions that stop at the five stations for parcel loading or unloading.
