‘Acted alone, used Discord’: Key revelations about Charlie Kirk’s shooting suspect Tyler Robinson
Hours after President Donald Trump announced that the suspect in Charlie Kirk’s killing had been taken into custody, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Utah Governor Spencer Cox shared crucial findings about the accused.
The shooter has been identified as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, a Utah resident. Trump earlier revealed that Robinson was turned in by “somebody very close to him.” Investigators later confirmed that Robinson had confessed—or at least “implied”—to a family friend that he had carried out the murder.
At a press conference, FBI chief Kash Patel and Governor Cox outlined the following revelations:
Key Findings About Tyler Robinson
-
Acted Alone: Cox said investigators currently believe Robinson acted alone. “We have no information at this time that would lead to additional arrests,” he added, though the probe is ongoing.
-
Confession to Family Friend: Robinson told—or strongly suggested to—a family friend that he had killed Charlie Kirk. That individual then contacted the Washington County sheriff’s office on Thursday, leading to Robinson’s arrest.
-
Motive: Robinson’s family told investigators he had expressed disdain for Kirk in the days leading up to the shooting, accusing him of “spreading hate.” At a dinner before September 10, Robinson reportedly mentioned Kirk’s upcoming visit to Utah Valley University (UVU) and described him as “full of hate.”
-
Inscriptions on Bullet Casings: Investigators recovered three unfired bullet casings with unusual inscriptions: “hey fascist! catch!”, “oh bella ciao bella ciao bella ciao ciao ciao,” and “if you read this you are gay lmao.”
-
Use of Discord and Pre-Planning: Robinson allegedly used the messaging platform Discord to coordinate his actions. According to his roommate, he described retrieving a rifle from a hidden drop point, concealing it under a towel, and surveilling the area. Investigators said he also stashed the weapon in nearby bushes and changed clothes afterward in an effort to evade capture.
