Hardik Pandya fulfils promise, rewards Wankhede groundsmen after T20 World Cup triumph

Hardik Pandya once again proved that his influence extends far beyond the cricket field, this time with a heartfelt gesture for the groundsmen at Wankhede Stadium.

The Mumbai Indians captain fulfilled a promise he had made months earlier, taking time out to honour the ground staff with gifts and financial support in recognition of their efforts.

In the lead-up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, Pandya had spent long nights training at the venue, with practice sessions often stretching well beyond regular hours. Throughout that period, the groundsmen ensured uninterrupted access and support—something he had acknowledged and vowed to repay.

On Thursday, he made good on that promise, felicitating the staff and rewarding them for their behind-the-scenes contribution.

The efforts of both player and staff paid off, as India national cricket team went on to successfully defend their title, defeating New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs in the final in Ahmedabad. Pandya played a key all-round role in the campaign, helping secure another major triumph.

The victory also made him a two-time T20 World Cup winner, having been part of the 2024-winning squad. Yet, it was this off-field gesture that stood out, reinforcing his reputation as someone who values those working quietly behind the scenes.

His actions off the field have consistently reflected that character. In a podcast with Ranveer Allahbadia, wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma shared how Pandya reached out to him during a difficult phase.

“Hardik bhai was the first one who messaged me when I wasn’t picked for the World Cup,” Jitesh said, adding that Pandya encouraged him to keep improving both as a person and a cricketer.

He also highlighted Pandya’s generosity, recalling how the all-rounder often gives bats to young fans without being asked.

For Pandya, the gesture at Wankhede wasn’t just symbolic—it was about keeping a promise. The same people who stayed back late to support his preparation were acknowledged in a meaningful way, underscoring the importance he places on those who contribute behind the scenes.
