Planning a trip to Vietnam’s visa-free Phu Quoc Island? Check new travel advisory
Nothing gets Indian travellers more excited than spotting “visa-free entry” while planning an international trip. And yes—that thrill is real.
While Indians usually need an e-visa or visa-on-arrival to visit Vietnam, Phu Quoc Island offers a visa-free entry option. However, the Embassy of India in Vietnam has issued a fresh advisory urging travellers to be mindful of two key concerns: the limited scope of this visa exemption and the risks of losing passports during travel.
The visa-free entry applies strictly to Phu Quoc Island—it does not permit travel to mainland Vietnam. So, if your itinerary includes cities like Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, you must obtain a valid visa in advance.
This becomes especially important in case of emergencies. Medical issues or flight disruptions may require travel to the mainland, and without a proper visa, Indian travellers could face delays in accessing services, along with immigration complications.
Because of this, the embassy advises travellers to consider getting a Vietnam visa beforehand—even if they plan to stay only on the island. It’s a small step that can prevent major hassles later.
The advisory also flags another recurring issue: lost passports. In such cases, travellers must immediately file a police complaint and report it to the Indian Embassy in Hanoi or the Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City. While emergency travel documents can often be issued quickly, exiting Vietnam typically takes 3–5 working days for an exit permit—and sometimes longer.
Phu Quoc continues to allow visa-free stays of up to 30 days for Indian visitors. But this advisory is a reminder that even the easiest travel options come with conditions.
Plan ahead, stay informed, and you’ll keep your trip smooth instead of stressful.
