Emirates has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Wesgro to boost inbound tourism to Cape Town and the wider Western Cape region. The agreement, announced during World Travel Market, aims to strengthen global connectivity and position the region as a leading international travel destination.

The MoU was signed by Emirates’ regional manager for Southern Africa Afzal Parambil and Wesgro CEO Wrenelle Stander, with a shared focus on increasing tourist arrivals, enhancing visibility in global markets, and supporting long-term, sustainable tourism growth.

Boost to connectivity and infrastructure

As part of the partnership, Emirates plans to expand its network and improve access to the region, including increasing flight frequency to Cape Town with additional services operated by the Airbus A350. The move is expected to drive year-round tourism, ease congestion at peak destinations, and encourage travel to lesser-known areas within the Western Cape.

Economic and employment impact

The collaboration is projected to generate significant economic benefits, including the creation of around 100 direct jobs and thousands of indirect employment opportunities. By promoting regional travel and boosting trade, the initiative aims to support local businesses and lay the groundwork for sustained economic development.

Building a global tourism hub

Beyond immediate gains, the partnership is designed to elevate Cape Town’s status as a world-class tourism hub. Improved air connectivity, combined with targeted destination marketing, is expected to attract more international visitors and investors, while diversifying tourism offerings across the region.

Focus on sustainable tourism

A key pillar of the agreement is sustainability. By promoting off-season travel and encouraging visitors to explore less crowded destinations, Emirates and Wesgro aim to reduce pressure on popular sites and support environmentally responsible tourism practices.

Looking ahead

With expanded flight operations, new routes, and continued investment in tourism infrastructure, the partnership sets the stage for long-term growth in South Africa’s tourism sector. As global connectivity improves, Cape Town and the Western Cape are poised to strengthen their position as premier travel destinations in the years ahead.
