Israel has approved the purchase of two new combat squadrons of advanced F-35 and F-15IA fighter aircraft from Lockheed Martin and Boeing, in a multibillion-dollar move aimed at strengthening its air power for the coming decade, the defense ministry said Sunday.

The agreement, cleared by Israel’s Ministerial Committee on Procurement, marks the first stage of a broader 350 billion shekel ($119 billion) military modernization plan designed to enhance readiness for future regional security challenges.

According to the defense ministry, the new squadrons will form a key pillar of the Israeli military’s long-term force development strategy, helping counter evolving threats while maintaining the country’s strategic air superiority.

Defense Ministry Director General Amir Baram said the procurement reflects the need to prepare beyond immediate wartime requirements.

“Alongside urgent operational needs, we have a responsibility to secure the IDF’s military edge for the next decade and beyond,” he said.

Baram added that the recent conflict with Iran underscored the importance of the US-Israel strategic alliance and the continued central role of advanced air power.

Under the deal, Israel will acquire a fourth F-35 squadron from Lockheed Martin and a second squadron of F-15IA fighter jets from Boeing.

The move builds on a previous agreement signed in December, when Boeing secured an $8.6 billion contract to supply Israel with 25 F-15IA aircraft, along with an option for 25 additional jets.

The next phase will involve finalizing the agreements with the US government and military counterparts, Baram said.

Defense Minister Israel Katz said recent military operations highlighted the decisive role of the Israeli Air Force and reinforced the need for continued investment in advanced capabilities.

He said the incoming aircraft will bring major technological upgrades, including enhanced autonomous flight systems, next-generation defense capabilities, and expanded military space integration.

“Our mission is to ensure the IDF has the capabilities to operate anywhere, at any time,” Katz said, adding that Israel will continue investing to maintain its military advantage in an increasingly volatile region.
