Tamil superstar-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Saturday morning, marking a historic political transition in the state as the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief officially assumed office.

Popularly known as ‘Thalapathy’, Vijay took oath at 10 am at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium amid loud cheers from supporters, family members and prominent personalities from the film industry.

An emotional oath-taking moment

As Vijay stepped onto the stage, chants of “Vijay, Vijay” echoed through the packed stadium, leaving the actor visibly emotional.

He began his oath with the words, “C Joseph Vijay ennum naan” (I, C Joseph Vijay), before pledging allegiance to the Constitution, promising to uphold India’s sovereignty and discharge his duties faithfully and without fear or favour.

Breaking from Tamil Nadu’s customary shirt-and-veshti attire for political ceremonies, Vijay chose a formal pant-suit for the occasion.

Family and film industry in attendance

The ceremony was attended by Vijay’s parents, veteran filmmaker SA Chandrasekhar and Shoba, along with several close family members.

Actor Trisha Krishnan and her mother Uma Krishnan were also present at the event and were seen interacting warmly with Vijay’s family, including his mother and cousins.

Seated in the front row, Trisha was spotted greeting guests and acknowledging those present at the venue.

When asked by the media ahead of the ceremony whether it was a big day for Tamil Nadu, Trisha responded, “Yes. Thank you, thank you. Looking forward.”

Several prominent figures from the Tamil film fraternity also attended, including producer Archana Kalpathi.

Wishes pour in from political and film circles

Congratulatory messages poured in from across political and cinematic circles following Vijay’s swearing-in.

Filmmaker Pa Ranjith expressed confidence in Vijay’s leadership, saying he was certain the new chief minister would lead a people-centric government.

Actor-politician Kamal Haasan also congratulated Vijay, wishing that Tamil Nadu reaches new heights under his leadership.

He additionally acknowledged the support extended by the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and Indian Union Muslim League for backing the TVK-led government.

Veteran actor Sathyaraj released a video message congratulating Vijay, while filmmaker-actor RJ Balaji called the moment “insane” and said he looked forward to an inclusive and progressive administration.

Historic political rise

With this swearing-in, Vijay becomes Tamil Nadu’s first chief minister in nearly six decades to come from outside the two dominant Dravidian parties — the DMK and AIADMK.

His elevation marks one of the most dramatic transitions in Tamil Nadu politics, as the actor made a swift leap from cinema superstardom to the state’s top political office.
