RCB’s Dynasty Begins: Back-to-Back Titles Announce a New IPL Superpower

3

Eighteen years of waiting. One title to break the curse. Another to prove it was no fluke.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru completed a remarkable transformation on Sunday, defending their IPL crown with a commanding victory over Gujarat Titans to become only the third franchise after Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings to win back-to-back titles.

The side that spent nearly two decades chasing its first trophy now looks every bit like a powerhouse built to dominate.

RCB’s title defence was as emphatic as it was clinical. After finishing atop the league stage with 18 points, they crushed Gujarat Titans by 92 runs in Qualifier 1 before returning to Ahmedabad to complete the job in front of nearly 90,000 spectators at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Far from showing signs of complacency, Rajat Patidar’s men appeared even more polished than the side that lifted the trophy in 2025.

Ahmedabad Turns Red

Although the final was played at Gujarat Titans’ home venue, the atmosphere suggested otherwise.

Thousands of RCB supporters flooded Ahmedabad days before the match, turning the city into a sea of red. By match day, the overwhelming majority of the crowd was firmly behind the defending champions.

RCB made full use of their early arrival, spending extra time training in Ahmedabad’s intense heat and familiarising themselves with the conditions. The preparation paid off immediately.

Bowlers Set the Tone

After electing to bowl first, RCB’s disciplined attack made life miserable for Gujarat’s star-studded batting lineup.

The dangerous opening pair, which had amassed more than 700 runs each during the season, was dismissed inside the powerplay for the third time against RCB this year. Josh Hazlewood struck early, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s clever use of the short ball trapped key batters.

Rasikh Salam Dar emerged as an unlikely hero, claiming three crucial wickets as RCB relentlessly squeezed the opposition.

At 26 for 2, Gujarat were already under immense pressure. The middle order never recovered.

Despite a fighting effort from Washington Sundar and a brief cameo from Arshad Khan, Gujarat could only manage 155 on a sluggish surface.

Virat Leads the Chase

The chase reflected RCB’s confidence throughout the season.

With Phil Salt unavailable, Venkatesh Iyer embraced an aggressive role at the top alongside Virat Kohli. The pair attacked from the outset, powering RCB beyond 70 runs in the powerplay despite losing wickets.

The defining moment arrived when Kohli dismantled Kagiso Rabada in a high-impact over that yielded 19 runs, effectively removing any lingering doubt about the result.

A brief resurgence from Rashid Khan, who dismissed both Rajat Patidar and Krunal Pandya in the same over, offered Gujarat a glimmer of hope. But Kohli remained unmoved.

The former captain anchored the chase with an unbeaten 75 off 42 balls, his first playoff fifty since the 2016 final. Alongside Tim David, he ensured RCB never lost control of the contest.

When the winning moment arrived, it was fittingly Kohli who delivered it, launching a six into the stands to seal the title.

From Nearly Men to Champions

For years, RCB were cricket’s great underachievers — a franchise rich in star power but poor in silverware.

That narrative has now been completely rewritten.

What began as a long-awaited breakthrough in 2025 has evolved into something far more significant. RCB are no longer celebrating a single triumph. They are building a dynasty.

Two titles in two seasons. A settled core. A fearless approach. And a fanbase that finally has the success it craved.

The long wait is over. The red revolution has arrived.
