Neymar makes emotional Brazil return after 981 days, marks fourth World Cup appearance
Neymar Jr’s long-awaited return to the Brazil national team produced an emotional moment as the superstar finally wore the iconic yellow jersey again after 981 days away from international football.
Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti had confirmed ahead of the World Cup clash against Scotland that Neymar would feature, although the forward began the match on the bench. He was brought on in the 76th minute, replacing Matheus Cunha, and received a huge reception from fans welcoming one of Brazil’s greatest footballers back on the global stage.
The appearance marked another historic achievement in Neymar’s career as he became part of the exclusive group of players to feature in four consecutive FIFA World Cups. Although his time on the pitch was limited, the significance of the moment was immense.
After the final whistle, Neymar was unable to hold back his emotions. Cameras captured the Brazilian star with tears in his eyes as he looked back on a difficult journey filled with injuries, setbacks and a prolonged absence from national team duty.
The emotional moment soon turned into a celebration when Neymar reunited with his wife and daughter on the sidelines, creating a memorable ending to his comeback night.
Neymar entered the tournament after recovering from a right calf injury that kept him out for more than a month. He returned to full training with Brazil on Sunday before making his comeback appearance.
The 34-year-old remains Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals in 129 international appearances and continues to be one of the most influential figures in the country’s football history.
Across his four World Cup campaigns, Neymar has scored eight goals and played a key role in Brazil’s pursuit of global success.
Vinicius Jr continues brilliant form
While Neymar’s return stole the spotlight, Vinicius Jr delivered another outstanding performance as Brazil defeated Scotland 3-0 to secure qualification for the Round of 32.
The Real Madrid forward scored twice, while Matheus Cunha also found the net for the second consecutive match.
Vinicius opened the scoring in the seventh minute and added another goal before halftime, taking his tournament tally to four goals. He has now scored in all three of Brazil’s group-stage matches and is level with Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe, just one goal behind Lionel Messi in the scoring charts.
