Eight passengers were killed and 11 others injured after a bus travelling from Rishikesh in Uttarakhand to Indore in Madhya Pradesh collided with a trailer truck and caught fire on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Rajasthan’s Dausa early Wednesday morning.

The accident took place around 3:30 am, officials said.

Dausa district collector Saumya Jha said around 37 passengers were on the bus when the crash occurred. Preliminary information suggested that the driver lost control of the vehicle, which hit the trailer before bursting into flames.

“About 25 passengers were rescued safely,” Jha said, adding that a helpline number had been issued to help families get information about the victims. The bodies had not yet been identified.

Congress MP from Dausa Murari Lal Meena reached the accident site after travelling from Jaipur and said 11 injured passengers were receiving treatment.

One passenger in critical condition was shifted to Jaipur for further medical care, he added.

Police said most of the passengers were from Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Rescue operations and identification of the victims were underway.
