Planning a Thailand trip? Indian Embassy highlights ₹58,000 proof-of-funds requirement
The Embassy of India in Thailand has issued a fresh travel advisory for Indian nationals planning to visit the Southeast Asian country, reminding travellers to comply with Thailand’s entry requirements, including carrying proof of adequate funds.
According to the advisory, Indian visitors should be prepared to show evidence of sufficient financial resources if asked by Thai immigration authorities upon arrival. The embassy highlighted Thailand’s long-standing requirement that foreign tourists may be required to demonstrate they have at least 20,000 Thai Baht (around ₹58,000) per person, or 40,000 Thai Baht per family, to support their stay.
The embassy noted that while immigration officials do not ask every traveller to present proof of funds, they have the authority to do so at any point during the entry process. Travellers who are unable to satisfy immigration requirements could face delays or even be denied entry.
What Indian travellers should keep in mind
The embassy advised passengers to:
- Carry a valid passport with adequate validity.
- Keep confirmed return or onward travel tickets.
- Have proof of hotel bookings or accommodation arrangements.
- Be ready to show sufficient funds, if requested by immigration officials.
- Ensure they meet all applicable visa or entry requirements before departure.
Travellers were also encouraged to keep important travel documents easily accessible and verify the latest immigration rules before flying, as entry requirements can change.
Why the cash rule matters
Thailand’s proof-of-funds requirement is not a new regulation but has gained renewed attention following the embassy’s advisory. The rule is intended to ensure that visitors have enough money to cover their expenses during their stay and do not become financially stranded.
The required amount can generally be demonstrated through cash or other forms of acceptable proof of funds, depending on the discretion of Thai immigration authorities. Travellers should therefore be prepared to provide satisfactory evidence if asked.
Advice before travelling
The Indian Embassy urged citizens to stay updated with official travel advisories and follow the instructions of Thai immigration authorities.
Before travelling, passengers should check the latest visa, immigration and customs requirements through the official Thai authorities and the Indian Embassy to ensure a smooth entry into the country.
The advisory serves as a reminder that meeting all documentation and financial requirements in advance can help avoid inconvenience at immigration checkpoints and make travel to Thailand hassle-free.
