Trump Says He’s ‘Happy’ Harry and Meghan Left US: ‘I Was Not a Fan’

US President Donald Trump has welcomed Prince Harry and his family’s decision to leave the United States and return to Britain, saying he was “happy” about their departure and had never been a fan of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

“I am happy about it. I was not a fan,” Trump said Wednesday in the Oval Office when asked about Harry and Meghan’s decision to leave California after six years in the US.

The couple, who stepped back from official royal duties in 2020 before relocating to the United States, returned to Britain with their family at the end of August.

Trump said he believed Harry and Meghan had treated the British royal family with “great disrespect”, while highlighting his “good relationship” with the late Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III, who is undergoing cancer treatment.

The US president also singled out Meghan for criticism.

“I didn’t like the way she acted. I thought she was terribly disrespectful,” Trump said.

Harry and Meghan’s departure from royal life was followed by a series of public revelations about their experiences within the monarchy. In a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Harry accused members of the royal family of neglect, while Meghan said there had been “concerns and conversations” within the family about how dark the skin of their unborn child might be.

Harry’s elder brother, Prince William, rejected the racism allegations at the time, saying, “We’re very much not a racist family.”

Harry also cited intense media scrutiny and concerns over security for his family as reasons for moving to California.

The couple are now expected to continue their lives in Britain as non-working royals. A person close to Harry and Meghan said last month that they planned to spend an extended period living outside London with their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, who are expected to attend school in Britain.

The precise reason for their return remains unclear, although Harry has previously spoken about wanting his children to spend more time in the UK.

Trump, meanwhile, said he would not have welcomed the couple back if he were a member of the royal family.

“If I were the royal family, I would not have taken them back,” he said.
