‘Where Is Abhijeet?’: CJP Questions Delhi Police Over Dipke’s Access To Family After Grandmother’s Death
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has questioned the Delhi Police over its handling of party founder Abhijeet Dipke’s request to speak to his family, saying his relatives want to contact him ahead of his grandmother’s last rites scheduled for Sunday morning.
In a post on X, the party demanded Dipke’s release and questioned his whereabouts, saying his family should at least be allowed to speak to him during the bereavement.
“Where is Abhijeet? His family wants to talk to him, they’re going to perform his grandmother’s last rites tomorrow morning. The least they deserve is to talk to him,” the CJP said.
The post came after the Delhi Police issued a statement on X saying Dipke had been informed about his grandmother’s death and the scheduled time of her funeral. The police also said it had offered to facilitate his journey to his hometown on humanitarian grounds.
“The unfortunate information, regarding the death of his grandmother and known time of her funeral was immediately shared with Sh. Abhijeet Dipke,” the Delhi Police said, adding that possible assistance for his journey home had also been offered.
Nearly 4,000 Detained In Delhi During CJP Protest
Nearly 4,000 people were detained in Delhi on Saturday in connection with the CJP’s protest at Jantar Mantar, according to the police.
Former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamata Banerjee and All India Students’ Association (AISA) leader Neha Bora were among those detained.
Reports also emerged of journalists being detained in the vicinity of Jantar Mantar. Videos and posts circulating on social media showed journalists displaying their press cards while inside police buses.
The protest was organised to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls.
Sonam Wangchuk Warns Of Fresh Hunger Strike
Activist Sonam Wangchuk on Saturday warned that he could launch another hunger strike if leaders detained during the crackdown on the anti-CEC protest were not released by Sunday.
In a video message shared on his social media accounts, Wangchuk alleged that the country was experiencing an “undeclared emergency” following the police action.
“Yesterday when I posted a message appealing for unity and peace in today’s protest, I had never imagined that the biggest democracy in the world would be under an undeclared EMERGENCY,” he wrote.
Wangchuk had expressed support for the protest but was unable to attend the demonstration in Delhi.
“I was happy there were so many leaders to lead the movement, but I now learn that they have all been arrested,” he said.
INDIA Bloc Leaders Detained At Jantar Mantar
Several INDIA bloc leaders, including former chief ministers Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee, Pinarayi Vijayan and Manik Sarkar, were detained by the Delhi Police on Saturday as they attempted to join the demonstration.
The protest sought Kumar’s resignation over allegations concerning the revision of electoral rolls. The Election Commission has maintained that its nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is intended to update voter lists and remove the names of deceased, duplicate and ineligible voters.
The police action, the detention of opposition leaders and the dispute over Dipke’s access to his family have intensified the confrontation surrounding the protest, with CJP leaders vowing to continue their agitation.
