Assam Wildlife Tourism Season Begins As Kaziranga, Manas National Parks Reopen
Assam has reopened its major wildlife destinations for the 2026-27 tourism season, welcoming visitors back to its national parks and wildlife sanctuaries following the annual monsoon closure.
The season began with the reopening of Manas National Park on October 2, while Kaziranga National Park reopened on October 3. Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is scheduled to reopen on October 13, marking the phased return of wildlife tourism across the state.
The reopening is expected to attract wildlife enthusiasts, nature lovers and tourists from across India and overseas to Assam’s biodiversity-rich landscapes.
Kaziranga Reopens For Wildlife Tourism
Kaziranga is among Assam’s biggest attractions and is renowned for its population of the one-horned rhinoceros, along with elephants, tigers, wild water buffalo, swamp deer and a wide variety of birds.
The Assam Forest Department describes Kaziranga as a major grassland ecosystem of the Brahmaputra Valley and highlights jeep and elephant safaris as key attractions for visitors.
Kaziranga also recorded 4.68 lakh visitors during the previous tourism season, including more than 30,000 foreign tourists, according to reports.
Manas National Park Welcomes Visitors
Manas National Park, located in western Assam along the Himalayan foothills, reopened on October 2.
The park is recognised as a Tiger Reserve, World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve and is known for its diverse wildlife and scenic landscape. The Assam government says Manas is home to nearly 60 mammal species and more than 500 bird species, including several globally threatened species.
The park is also known for species including the golden langur, rhinoceros, elephant, tiger, pygmy hog and several varieties of deer and birds.
Pobitora To Reopen On October 13
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is scheduled to reopen to tourists on October 13.
Located relatively close to Guwahati, Pobitora is particularly known for its high concentration of one-horned rhinoceroses. The Assam Tourism Department describes it as a compact wildlife destination that can be explored even during a short trip from Guwahati.
Best Time To Visit Assam For Wildlife
The reopening comes ahead of the peak wildlife tourism period in Assam. The state Forest Department lists November to April as the best season for visiting major destinations such as Kaziranga and Manas.
With the new tourism season now underway, travellers planning safaris are expected to benefit from the reopening of Assam’s major wildlife destinations, although safari availability, routes and entry arrangements can vary by park and season.
