Board of Control for Cricket in India shortlists Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for Ireland T20Is; teen set to become India’s youngest debutant: Report
The Board of Control for Cricket in India selection panel, led by Ajit Agarkar, appears ready to reward teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi with a potential call-up for India’s T20I tour of Ireland in June following IPL 2026.
At just 15, Sooryavanshi is reportedly in contention for the squad, and if selected, he would become India’s youngest international debutant, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar, who debuted at 16.
The tour, scheduled for June 26 and 28, could serve as a platform to fast-track the Rajasthan Royals prodigy into senior international cricket. A strong showing may even put him in line for the subsequent Zimbabwe series in July, signalling the selectors’ willingness to accelerate his rise rather than take a cautious approach.
Sooryavanshi’s rapid ascent has been fuelled by standout performances in both the IPL and age-group cricket. After bursting onto the scene with Rajasthan Royals, he grabbed headlines with explosive batting, including a stunning century early in his IPL career.
His dominance continued at the Under-19 level, highlighted by a record-breaking 175 in the World Cup final against England, helping India clinch the title. The knock drew widespread praise, including from former England captain Michael Vaughan.
In IPL 2026, he further strengthened his case by taking on top bowlers with fearless strokeplay—dispatching the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar with ease.
Support has poured in from former cricketers and officials alike, including IPL chairman Arun Dhumal, as calls grow louder for India to hand the teenage prodigy an early international debut.
