Kalatan Dasgupta is a youth leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from West Bengal who rose through student activism, beginning with the Students’ Federation of India and later working in the Democratic Youth Federation of India.
His political base has been built through campus politics, grassroots mobilisation, and organisational work in Kolkata and North 24 Parganas, with a profile rooted more in movement-led activism than elected office.
He came into wider public focus during the RG Kar Medical College protest movement, where he emerged as a visible Left voice in demonstrations around institutional accountability, safety, and governance. The protests significantly expanded his recognition beyond party circles.
Dasgupta is now contesting the Panihati Assembly constituency as a CPI(M) candidate, marking his first major electoral contest. He faces a multi-cornered fight against Tirthankar Ghosh of the All India Trinamool Congress and Ratna Debnath of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The Panihati seat has in recent years been dominated by the Trinamool Congress, with Nirmal Ghosh winning in 2021 and maintaining strong influence in the area.
This election marks Dasgupta’s first serious entry into mainstream electoral politics, as he has not previously served as an MLA or held any legislative office, with his work largely centred on organisational and protest-driven roles.
