Cristiano Ronaldo’s Shock Portugal Exit Sparks ‘Irreversible’ Retirement Speculation: Was Wales His Final Game?
Cristiano Ronaldo’s surprise departure from the Portugal national team camp ahead of Thursday’s Nations League match against Denmark has triggered speculation over whether the veteran forward has played his final game for the country.
According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, Ronaldo left not only the team’s training camp but also the hotel where Portugal are staying in Copenhagen. The report claimed his decision not to return to the squad is “irreversible”, potentially making Portugal’s group-stage match against Wales his final international appearance.
Ronaldo confirmed his departure from the camp on social media after speaking with Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) president Pedro Proença. The development came after Portugal coach Jorge Jesus indicated that the 41-year-old would not start against Denmark.
Ronaldo Says He Will Reveal Reasons ‘In Due Time’
Ronaldo said he decided to leave after the conversation with Proença and promised to explain the reasons behind his decision at a later stage.
“In due time, I will tell all Portuguese people the truth about the reasons that motivated my departure from the national team,” Ronaldo wrote.
The Al Nassr forward also wished his teammates well ahead of the Denmark match.
Ronaldo’s Portugal Future Uncertain
Ronaldo, who has scored 979 career goals, has previously indicated that the ongoing Saudi Pro League season could be his final campaign as a professional footballer.
He has also said the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be his last, although he has not specified when he intends to end his international career with Portugal.
Since the World Cup, Ronaldo has featured for Portugal only once, against Wales on September 25 in Lisbon. He had a frustrating outing, with five of his seven attempts missing the target and another second-half effort ruled out following a VAR review. He was substituted in the 67th minute.
Jesus had also left Ronaldo on the bench for Portugal’s match against Norway, with Gonçalo Ramos starting in his place as Portugal secured a 2-1 victory.
