Delhi Police Boosts Security As CJP Seeks Nod For October 10 Jantar Mantar March
The Delhi Police on Wednesday intensified security around Parliament Street police station, Parliament and Tolstoy Marg ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)’s planned visit to submit a letter seeking permission for a march at Jantar Mantar on October 10.
The CJP has announced the protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
CJP co-convener Saurav Das said on X that he would submit an intimation letter at 10 am on Wednesday. He said the Constitution of India guarantees citizens the right to assemble and protest peacefully.
Following the announcement, the Delhi Police stepped up security around Parliament Street police station and adjoining areas. Jantar Mantar, the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters and several nearby roads have already been heavily barricaded.
Security has also been increased around Connaught Place after a group of women protesters reached the area on Tuesday night.
Police officials said additional pickets had been deployed near the ECI office, Sansad Marg, Barakhamba Road and Connaught Place, with vehicles being subjected to checks.
The Delhi Police has also installed loudspeakers across the Lutyens’ Delhi area to announce prohibitory orders. More than 150 personnel equipped with body cameras have been deployed to record events during protests, confrontations and detentions.
The deployment comes days after three women accused police personnel of sexually harassing them during a similar protest on Saturday. Police said three complaints were received and subsequently transferred to the Crime Branch for investigation.
“There’s a lot of targeting going on against Delhi Police officers. The body cameras have been given to record everything during the protests, the confrontations and the detentions so we have proof,” a senior police officer said.
On Tuesday, Delhi Police detained around 260 people, including 10 MPs, during an Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc protest. Police said the protesters had neither sought nor received permission for the demonstration and continued their agitation despite prohibitory orders imposed under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in the New Delhi jurisdiction.
The police also arrested 17 people and registered five FIRs in connection with similar protests on Monday.
Several groups, including the CJP, AISA, INDIA bloc and AAP, have held protests in the national capital over the past few days.
