Delhi Weather Today: Dense Fog Causes Delays for Nearly 200 Flights, 6 Cancelled in Delhi-NCR
Nearly 200 flights were delayed and several others cancelled at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on Monday morning due to dense, zero-visibility fog, prompting authorities to implement low-visibility procedures for flight operations.
According to FlightRadar24 data accessed around 8:45 am, at least 144 departing flights and 51 arriving flights were delayed, while six flights were cancelled. Flight operations were being carried out under CAT III procedures, which enable aircraft to land safely in extremely low visibility conditions.
In an advisory posted on X, Delhi airport said, “Flight operations are currently being conducted under CAT III conditions due to dense fog, which may result in delays or cancellations. Our ground teams are actively assisting passengers. For the latest updates, travellers are advised to contact their respective airlines.”
Several airlines also urged passengers to check flight status before heading to the airport. IndiGo said fluctuating visibility had affected schedules at Delhi and Hindon airports, warning that operations may be slower than usual. Air India, in an advisory issued on Sunday evening, cautioned passengers about possible delays and asked them to allow extra travel time. SpiceJet issued a similar advisory, citing poor visibility conditions.
Rail services were also impacted, with several trains running late as large parts of north India experienced reduced visibility on Monday morning.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast dense to very dense fog across parts of north India over the coming days. Fog is expected to persist during night and early morning hours in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and west Uttar Pradesh until December 31, while east Uttar Pradesh may see similar conditions until January 1.
The IMD has issued an orange alert for Delhi on December 29. The maximum temperature in the capital is likely to hover around 22 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is expected to dip to about 7 degrees Celsius.
