Ekta Kapoor Distances Herself from ALTT After Govt Bans 25 OTT Platforms for Obscene Content
Producer Ekta Kapoor has issued a public statement clarifying her disassociation from OTT platform ALTT, after the Indian government ordered a ban on 25 streaming apps — including ALTT and ULLU — for allegedly streaming obscene and vulgar content.
Taking to Instagram, Kapoor emphasized that neither she nor her mother, Shobha Kapoor, have any involvement with ALTT, and had stepped down from the platform back in June 2021.
🔹 Ekta Kapoor’s Statement
In her official statement, Kapoor wrote:
“Balaji Telefilms Limited, listed on the BSE and NSE, is a professionally run media organization. Following the recent amalgamation of ALT Digital Media Entertainment Ltd. (previously its wholly owned subsidiary), duly approved by the Hon’ble NCLT, it operates ALTT w.e.f. June 20, 2025.”
She further clarified:
“Ms. Ekta Kapoor and Mrs. Shobha Kapoor are not associated in any capacity whatsoever with ALTT. Any insinuation contrary to the above facts is strongly denied. Media is requested to report the accurate facts.”
The post was captioned: “To whomsoever it may concern.”
She also reaffirmed that Balaji Telefilms complies with all applicable laws and continues to function with high standards of corporate governance.
🔹 Why Was ALTT Banned?
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in consultation with other government departments and rights bodies, banned 25 OTT platforms for violating provisions under the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the IT Rules, 2021. The platforms were found streaming sexually explicit content, vulgarity, and pornographic scenes without meaningful narrative or social context.
Platforms banned include:
-
ALTT
-
ULLU
-
Big Shots App
-
Desiflix
-
Boomex
-
Navarasa Lite
-
Gulab App
-
Kangan App
-
…and several others like ShowX, MoodX, Triflicks, and HotX VIP
Officials stated that many of these platforms ignored earlier warnings and continued publishing objectionable content. Some had even reappeared under new domain names after being blocked in the past.
The move followed complaints from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and members of the public. One such example is Ullu’s “House Arrest”, which was pulled in May 2025 after ministry intervention.
