‘Hypocrisy pro max’: BJP slams Congress after Hyderabad road named after Trump
The unveiling of “Donald Trump Avenue” in Hyderabad has sparked a political controversy, with the BJP accusing the Congress-led Telangana government of sending mixed signals over US President Donald Trump.
A ceremonial plaque naming the road near the US Consulate in Hyderabad as “Donald Trump Avenue” was unveiled on Tuesday as part of the “Freedom 250” celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American Independence.
The plaque was jointly unveiled by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor and Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka at an event attended by Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, US Consul General Laura Williams, diplomats, officials and industry representatives.
The Telangana government said the move was a tribute to the United States and reflected Hyderabad’s growing role in strengthening India-US ties.
Thanking the state government, Ambassador Gor said the gesture represented the strong partnership promoted by Trump.
“We are deeply grateful to the Government of Telangana for the generous tribute of naming Donald Trump Avenue, a gesture that reflects the kind of strong, respectful partnership President Trump has championed for America,” he said.
Vikramarka said Hyderabad had become one of India’s key links with the US, especially in areas such as technology, aerospace and defence.
BJP targets Congress over Trump honour
The road naming ceremony quickly became a political flashpoint, with the BJP targeting the Congress over its past criticism of Trump.
BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla questioned why a Congress government honoured Trump despite criticism from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over US policies and trade issues.
“Rahul Ki Hypocrisy Pro Max. Rahul Gandhi says President TRUMP hurting Indian interests. Then why is his government in Telangana giving the ultimate tribute to him by renaming a road after him?” Poonawalla posted on X.
He also criticised Revanth Reddy, alleging that the Telangana chief minister had earlier ignored Rahul Gandhi’s attacks on the Adani Group.
The BJP also cited Rahul Gandhi’s criticism of the India-US trade agreement, in which he accused the government of compromising India’s interests and urged Washington to engage with India “as equals.”
The controversy has added another political layer to the debate over India-US relations and the Congress-led Telangana government’s outreach to Washington.
