Important to implement women’s quota in 2029: Narendra Modi writes to LS, RS floor leaders

Narendra Modi has called for all political parties to unite in support of implementing women’s reservation before the 2029 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, describing it as essential for strengthening India’s democracy.

In a letter to floor leaders of both Houses of Parliament ahead of a special three-day session, Modi stressed that empowering women in decision-making roles is critical for India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation.

He urged parties to back amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam so that the provisions can be enforced in time for the 2029 elections. Under the current framework, the 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies is tied to a delimitation exercise based on the 2027 Census, meaning implementation could otherwise be delayed until 2034.

Modi said bringing the law into effect earlier would inject new energy into democratic institutions, enhance representation, and boost public trust. He described the upcoming parliamentary discussions as a “historic opportunity” to translate long-standing political consensus into action.

Highlighting women’s growing role across sectors—from science and sports to entrepreneurship—the prime minister said the move would be a significant step toward ensuring greater participation of women in governance.

He also recalled the cross-party support the legislation received in 2023, calling it a milestone moment in India’s parliamentary history, and expressed confidence that lawmakers would once again come together to pass the necessary amendments.
