Modi Promises ‘Bahut Bada Tohfa’ for Citizens by Diwali in I-Day Address

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day address from the Red Fort on Thursday, said the government will launch the next phase of Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms by Diwali, calling it a “bahut bada tohfa” (big gift) for Indians.

The overhaul will focus on rationalising tax slabs and lowering GST rates on essential and everyday items, aimed at easing household expenses and boosting consumption.

“By this Diwali, you will see a simplified GST structure that makes life easier for the common man and strengthens our economy,” Modi said, adding that the changes would also improve compliance and transparency.
