IPL: What’s wrong with Sanju Samson? CSK coach Stephen Fleming downplays poor start

Chennai Super Kings’ marquee signing Sanju Samson endured a third straight failure in the Indian Premier League 2026 season, as CSK slumped to another defeat—this time while chasing 251 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Bengaluru.

Samson, brought in from Rajasthan Royals in a high-profile trade, was dismissed for a single-digit score yet again, raising concerns over his form after a strong showing in the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Fleming backs Samson amid lean patch

Despite the struggles, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming defended the wicketkeeper-batter, pointing to the challenges of adapting to a new franchise after years with one team.

Samson, who debuted in the IPL in 2013 and grew into a leader at Rajasthan, is now seen as a long-term successor to MS Dhoni. Fleming said the team is working off the field to help him settle and rebuild confidence.

“He’s still connecting with the group. It takes time, especially with a squad that’s not fully settled,” Fleming noted, adding that the team remains fully supportive.

RCB dominate in high-scoring clash

In the match at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, RCB posted a massive 250—the highest total of the season—before sealing a 43-run win over the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led CSK.

While CSK controlled the game for the first 15 overs, the final stretch proved costly. Tim David and Rajat Patidar powered RCB’s late surge, smashing 97 runs in the last five overs.

A no-ball reprieve for David proved pivotal, with CSK pacer Anshul Kamboj bearing the brunt of the assault.

Fleming admitted the lapse in execution under pressure made the difference. “Against a hitter like Tim David, you have to be precise. We weren’t, and we paid the price,” he said.

What next for CSK?

With three consecutive losses, Chennai Super Kings will look to regroup during a five-day break before facing Delhi Capitals on April 11 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Fleming also expressed hope that middle-order batter Dewald Brevis will be available for the upcoming clash as CSK aim to turn their campaign around.
