Iran warns of retaliation against US assets as Gulf tensions rise

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Saturday warned that it could target American military positions across West Asia and strike “enemy ships” if Iranian commercial tankers come under attack, according to Iranian state media.

The warning follows reports of US strikes on two Iranian tankers in the Gulf of Oman a day earlier, further escalating already heightened tensions in the region. The IRGC said any assault on Iranian commercial vessels would provoke a “heavy and decisive” response against US assets operating in the area.

The latest threat adds to fears of a wider confrontation as diplomatic efforts continue behind the scenes to prevent further escalation.

Rubio holds talks with Qatar PM

Amid the growing tensions, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani on Saturday to discuss the unfolding situation.

The meeting underscored Qatar’s critical role in regional diplomacy, particularly as a mediator in ongoing efforts to ease tensions between Washington and Tehran.

According to US officials, discussions focused on maintaining regional security and stability, while Washington also expressed appreciation for Qatar’s continued diplomatic engagement across multiple regional flashpoints.

The talks come as the United States awaits Tehran’s response to a proposed initiative aimed at extending the current truce and opening formal peace negotiations.

Hezbollah launches drone strike

In another sign of rising instability, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for a drone strike targeting Israeli troops in northern Israel.

The Iran-backed Lebanese group said the attack was retaliation for recent Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon despite an existing ceasefire arrangement.

Hezbollah also reported carrying out rocket and drone attacks against Israeli military positions inside Lebanese territory.

Israel confirmed multiple drone launches from Lebanon, saying one reservist was seriously injured in the attacks.

The fresh exchange of fire has raised concerns that the Israel-Lebanon front could witness renewed escalation.

Iran yet to respond to US proposal

Iran has so far not publicly responded to the latest American proposal aimed at reviving diplomatic talks.

Tehran has questioned Washington’s commitment to diplomacy, particularly after recent naval confrontations in the Gulf.

US President Donald Trump said late Friday that he expected Iran’s response by that night, but there was no official indication from Tehran by Saturday.

The absence of a response has added uncertainty to an already fragile regional situation, with military tensions rising even as diplomatic channels remain open.
