K Annamalai Quits BJP, Party Confirms Resignation Amid Speculation Over Next Political Move
Bringing an end to days of speculation, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday confirmed that former Tamil Nadu unit chief K Annamalai has resigned from the party. In a statement, the BJP said national president Nitin Nabin had accepted Annamalai’s resignation from the party’s primary membership.
The development comes amid persistent rumours about the former IPS officer’s future in politics and growing buzz over a possible new political venture.
Annamalai, popularly known as “Singham” for his outspoken style and aggressive political campaigns, is expected to address a press conference later in the day, which he has described as a “heart-to-heart conversation.”
Exit Follows Months of Speculation
Questions over Annamalai’s future within the BJP intensified after he was replaced as the party’s Tamil Nadu president following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Political observers had suggested that the leadership change left him dissatisfied, although he never publicly expressed any resentment.
Speculation gathered further momentum after the BJP’s disappointing performance in the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The party managed to secure just one seat, down from four previously, despite a marginal increase in its vote share from 2.67 percent to 2.97 percent.
The elections also marked the emergence of the party led by actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay, whose Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single-largest party in its electoral debut.
Will Annamalai Launch a New Party?
Rumours about Annamalai’s resignation first surfaced after he was left out of the BJP’s list of candidates for the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls. Following the party’s poor electoral showing, he travelled to Delhi to meet senior BJP leaders, further fuelling speculation about his future plans.
Reports have since suggested that Annamalai may be considering launching a new political outfit. When asked about the possibility earlier this week, however, he remained non-committal.
“Please wait. We will sit down and talk in two days,” he said, hinting that a formal announcement could be imminent.
From IPS Officer to BJP’s Tamil Nadu Face
Annamalai entered politics in 2021 after resigning from the Indian Police Service. The BJP fielded him in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections that year, and despite his defeat, he quickly rose through the party ranks.
Soon after, he was appointed president of the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit, a position he held for three years. During his tenure, he became one of the party’s most recognisable faces in the state and played a central role in expanding the BJP’s presence in Tamil Nadu.
Although the BJP failed to win any seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, it registered a notable increase in vote share under his leadership. Following the parliamentary polls, he was replaced by Nainar Nagendran as the state unit chief.
‘I Could Have Contested From Anywhere’
Several reports linked Annamalai’s departure to the BJP’s decision not to field him in the 2026 Assembly elections. However, he rejected those claims, insisting that staying out of the electoral contest was his own decision.
“If I had decided to contest, it wouldn’t have mattered which constituency. I could have contested from anywhere,” he had said.
Annamalai also stated that he had formally informed the party leadership of his decision to remain out of the electoral fray and thanked the BJP for respecting his choice.
With his resignation now official, attention is likely to shift to his upcoming announcement and whether he intends to chart an independent political course in Tamil Nadu.
