A 45-year-old medical representative allegedly killed his 11-year-old twin daughters at their apartment in Kidwai Nagar in the early hours of Sunday, before calling the police emergency helpline himself, officials said.

When police teams arrived, they found the girls lying on the bedroom floor with a blood-stained knife nearby. The father was seated beside them and was taken into custody on the spot.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Deependra Nath Chaudhary confirmed the arrest, adding that the motive remains unclear. “We received a call on 112 at around 4:30 am from the आरोपी himself,” he said.

Investigators suspect the man may have been suffering from depression or another psychiatric condition and are examining whether he was undergoing treatment.

Wife unaware, asleep in another room

The accused’s wife was asleep in a different part of the flat and only learned of the incident when police arrived. Speaking to reporters, she demanded strict punishment.

Police said the man’s behaviour had changed significantly after his mother’s death a few months ago. According to his wife, he had spoken repeatedly about wanting to die and had expressed intentions of taking the daughters with him. He had also installed CCTV cameras across the house and closely monitored her movements, restricting access to his room.

Events before the crime

On Saturday night, the family had dinner together as usual. The father later took the children to his room and spent a long time on the phone. The wife, who was monitoring CCTV footage, saw him take one daughter to the bathroom around 2:30 am before returning and switching off the lights. She went to sleep, unaware of what followed.

Forensic teams recovered a large number of medicines from the room. Preliminary findings suggest the children may have been subdued before the attack. Police are also investigating whether they were sedated, given the accused’s access to pharmaceuticals. His wife confirmed he regularly consumed sleeping pills.

The twins were Class 5 students at a school located opposite their residence. Their six-year-old brother was with their mother at the time of the incident.

Police said there was no indication of financial distress or monetary dispute, and the investigation is ongoing.
