Mbappé scripts more World Cup history as France storm into semi-finals
France booked their place in the FIFA World Cup semi-finals with a clinical 2-0 victory over Morocco, but the night belonged to captain Kylian Mbappé, who responded to an early penalty miss by producing another record-breaking performance on football’s biggest stage.
After seeing his first-half spot-kick saved by Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, Mbappé broke the deadlock with a superb curling finish in the 60th minute. Ousmane Dembélé doubled France’s lead six minutes later to seal the quarter-final victory.
With his latest goal, Mbappé added several more milestones to an already extraordinary World Cup career.
First player to score eight goals at two World Cups
Mbappé became the first player in men’s World Cup history to score at least eight goals in two different editions of the tournament.
He first reached the mark at Qatar 2022, where he scored eight goals, including a hat-trick in the final against Argentina. His strike against Morocco took him to eight goals again at the 2026 World Cup.
Double-digit goal involvements in consecutive World Cups
The France captain has now recorded at least 10 direct goal involvements in back-to-back World Cups.
He finished the 2022 tournament with eight goals and two assists, while his 2026 tally stands at eight goals and three assists, giving him 11 goal contributions. No player since records began in 1966 has achieved double-digit goal involvements in two separate World Cups.
Best World Cup tally since Gerd Müller
Mbappé’s 11 goal involvements are the highest by any player at a single World Cup since Germany legend Gerd Müller registered 13 (10 goals and three assists) at the 1970 tournament.
More than five decades later, Mbappé is the closest any player has come to matching that remarkable achievement.
Record eight World Cup match-winning goals
His goal against Morocco also proved to be the decisive strike, giving Mbappé a record eight match-winning goals at FIFA World Cups.
The record highlights not only his scoring ability but also his knack for delivering in the competition’s biggest moments.
Youngest player to reach 20 World Cup appearances
At 27 years and 201 days, Mbappé became the youngest player ever to make 20 World Cup appearances, surpassing Poland’s Władysław Żmuda, who reached the milestone at 28 years and 34 days.
He celebrated the landmark by scoring his 20th World Cup goal.
France’s first player with 100 goal contributions
The Morocco match also took Mbappé to 100 direct goal involvements for France, comprising 64 goals and 36 assists.
According to Opta, he is the first French international to reach the century mark. Earlier in the tournament, he also became France’s all-time leading men’s international goalscorer, overtaking Olivier Giroud.
France’s deadly attacking duo
With Mbappé now on eight goals and Dembélé scoring his fifth of the tournament, France became the first team since Brazil in 2002 to have two players score at least five goals in the same men’s World Cup.
Brazil achieved the feat through Ronaldo (eight goals) and Rivaldo (five) on their way to lifting the trophy. France’s star duo have now matched those numbers and are two wins away from emulating Brazil’s title-winning campaign.
