Missile chemicals from China found on seized Iranian ship in Strait of Hormuz? Here’s what Nikki Haley claims

14

Nikki Haley, a member of Donald Trump’s Republican Party, has claimed that a vessel recently intercepted by the US Navy was carrying materials linked to Iran’s missile programme.

In a post on X, Haley said the ship—seized in the Strait of Hormuz—was travelling from China to Iran and had refused repeated orders to stop. She alleged the cargo was connected to chemical shipments used in missile development and warned that Beijing’s support for Tehran was becoming increasingly evident.

Vessel identified as ‘Touska’

The ship has been identified as the Iranian-flagged container vessel Touska, reportedly part of the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines network, which is under US sanctions. According to tracking data, US forces boarded it near Chabahar Port in the Gulf of Oman.

Iran condemns move

Iranian authorities said the vessel had departed from China and denounced the US action as “armed piracy.” Tehran also signalled it may not participate in upcoming talks in Islamabad unless the blockade is lifted.

US assessment

US security officials, cited in reports, said preliminary assessments suggest the ship may have been carrying “dual-use” materials—items that can serve both civilian and military purposes. However, no specific cargo details have been publicly confirmed.

The United States Central Command has previously identified materials such as industrial metals, pipes, and electronic components as goods that could be repurposed for missile programmes.

Sanctions backdrop

Washington imposed sanctions on IRISL in 2019, accusing it of facilitating procurement for Iran’s ballistic missile programme. The latest interception adds to rising tensions amid ongoing disputes over maritime security and regional stability.
