Facing backlash from critics and “extremists” on social media, the provincial government of Pakistan’s Punjab has deferred its decision to restore several pre-Partition Hindu and British-era names of roads and localities in Lahore, according to reports.
The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, had in March proposed restoring historical names of several landmarks in the provincial capital as part of a broader heritage conservation initiative.
The Lahore Heritage Areas Revival (LHAR), chaired by former Pakistan prime minister and PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif and supported by CM Maryam Nawaz, had approved the proposal on March 16. It included plans to revert the names of multiple roads, bazaars and neighbourhoods to their earlier historical identities.
The proposal was part of the wider Lahore Authority for Heritage Revival (LAHR) project, described as a multi-billion-rupee effort aimed at preserving and restoring the city’s architectural and cultural heritage, PTI reported.
