Rajasthan Royals breach IPL protocol, manager under fire after viral video catches him red-handed
Rajasthan Royals, the only unbeaten side in IPL 2026 with four wins in four matches, have landed in controversy after a viral moment from their clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Guwahati allegedly pointed to a breach of league rules. Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi also reacted strongly, calling for “immediate action.”
In a clip widely shared on social media, Rajasthan Royals manager Romi Bhinder was seen using a mobile phone in the team dugout, with player Vaibhav Sooryavanshi appearing to glance at the device. The footage, captured during the 11th over of Rajasthan’s chase of 202, surfaced shortly after Vaibhav’s dismissal.
Dugout phone use under scrutiny
As per IPL’s Player and Match Officials Area (PMOA) protocol, mobile phones and other communication devices are strictly prohibited in designated zones, including dugouts. While certain electronic devices are allowed, this exception applies only to team analysts operating from a designated analyst table.
The rules clearly state that while a team manager may use a phone in the dressing room, its use in the dugout is not permitted. Players and support staff are also required to deposit their devices with the Team Security Liaison Officer upon entering the stadium.
Oversight of these regulations is handled by officials from the BCCI’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit, who are tasked with ensuring compliance across all restricted areas.
Lalit Modi raises alarm
Reacting to the viral footage, Lalit Modi questioned how such a breach could occur under official supervision.
“Having a mobile phone in the dugout is a complete no-no. Did this really happen? I hope not. If it did, then the IPL governing council needs to take immediate action,” he said.
The Rajasthan Royals have not yet issued an official response to the controversy.
