Record-Breaking Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge Opens to Public in China
China has officially opened the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, now recognised as the world’s highest bridge, soaring 625 meters above a gorge in Guizhou province. The bridge dramatically reduces travel time across the canyon, cutting what used to be a two-hour journey to just two minutes, according to the BBC.
On September 28, live drone footage broadcast by state media showed vehicles crossing the bridge, with its striking blue towers partially shrouded in clouds. Crowds of onlookers, project engineers, and local officials attended the opening ceremony, expressing pride and excitement, AFP reported.
Rigorous Testing Ensured Safety
Before opening, the bridge underwent extensive testing. Engineers conducted a load test using 96 trucks placed at strategic points, while over 400 sensors monitored the main span, towers, cables, and suspenders for even the slightest shifts.
A Record-Breaking Engineering Feat
The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge now holds two prestigious records: the world’s highest bridge and the largest-span bridge in a mountainous area. Stretching 2,900 meters in total length with a main span of 1,420 meters, the bridge also features tourist attractions, including a 207-meter sightseeing elevator, sky cafes, and viewing platforms offering breathtaking canyon views.
Project manager Wu Zhaoming from Guizhou Transportation Investment Group Co., Ltd. highlighted construction challenges, including managing large-scale concrete pours, stabilising steep slopes, and mitigating strong winds. Despite these hurdles, the bridge was completed ahead of schedule.
China dominates global bridge rankings, with eight of the world’s top ten tallest bridges already in operation, all in Guizhou province.
