Rubio Rejects Exit Rumours, Reaffirms Commitment to Trump Administration

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has dismissed reports that he is considering leaving the Trump administration, insisting that he intends to remain in office until the end of President Donald Trump’s term.

In an interview with The New York Times on Thursday, Rubio said serving under Trump until the conclusion of his presidency had “always been my plan.”

The remarks came amid speculation about Rubio’s future following Republican losses in the midterm elections and growing attention to his potential political ambitions ahead of the 2028 presidential race.

Rubio, who also serves as Trump’s national security adviser, is widely viewed as a possible contender for the Republican presidential nomination in 2028.

In an unusual campaign appearance just days before Tuesday’s midterm elections, Rubio joined Trump on the campaign trail and briefly addressed an enthusiastic crowd at a rally.

However, he declined to discuss his long-term political plans when questioned on Thursday.

“I literally will not talk about 2028 anymore,” he said.

Responding to reports that he was considering leaving the administration, Rubio told The New York Times: “I don’t know where these things come from, to be honest with you.”

State Department rejects resignation reports

Earlier Thursday, Bloomberg News reported that Rubio was weighing the possibility of stepping down from his government positions.

According to the report, Rubio had discussed a potential departure with White House officials, who subsequently asked him to remain in the administration.

The State Department strongly rejected the claims.

Dylan Johnson, Assistant Secretary of State for Global Public Affairs, described the Bloomberg report as “totally made up.”

Johnson also dismissed a separate report by British news outlet The Independent, which claimed Rubio was preparing to launch a campaign for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination.

He labelled the report “completely baseless fake news.”

Rubio previously backed JD Vance for 2028

Despite speculation surrounding his own political ambitions, Rubio has previously indicated that he would support Vice President JD Vance if he decided to seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2028.

Vance is also widely regarded as a potential contender in the next presidential election.

Rubio’s latest comments appear aimed at putting speculation about his immediate departure to rest, although he has continued to avoid discussing whether he might pursue higher political office after completing his current government responsibilities.
