Trump Administration Revokes Over 300,000 Visas As Immigration Crackdown Intensifies
US President Donald Trump’s administration has revoked more than 300,000 visas since the start of his second term, the State Department said on Tuesday, highlighting the accelerating pace of its immigration crackdown.
The latest figure marks a significant increase from the more than 175,000 visa revocations reported by the department on August 10, with the administration intensifying its efforts to tighten immigration enforcement.
Trump has defended the crackdown and deportation drive as necessary measures to strengthen domestic security. However, civil rights advocates have accused his administration of undermining due process and free speech protections while creating an increasingly hostile environment for immigrants, particularly ethnic minorities concerned about racial profiling.
State Department Defends Visa Revocations
Announcing the latest figures on X, State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said the administration had revoked visas at an unprecedented rate.
“The Trump administration has revoked more visas at a faster pace than any administration in history,” Pigott said.
He added that the government maintained “zero tolerance for foreigners here on visas who break the law, commit fraud, or undermine our national security.”
The State Department had previously reported more than 175,000 revocations since Trump began his second term in January 2025, as of its August 10 update.
Pro-Palestinian Protesters Among Those Targeted
Some visa revocations have drawn particular criticism from rights groups, including cases involving foreign nationals who participated in pro-Palestinian protests against Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.
Other cases have involved foreign nationals whose social media comments about the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk attracted scrutiny from the administration.
Alongside efforts to deport foreign protesters, the government has tightened social media screening requirements for immigrants and visa applicants.
Civil rights advocates argue that national security concerns have been used to target government critics and that individual cases of alleged fraud have sometimes been used to justify broader scrutiny of immigrant communities.
The Somali American community in Minnesota has been among those cited by advocates as facing increased scrutiny.
Legal Immigration Also Faces Tighter Restrictions
Although Trump made stopping illegal immigration a central promise of his 2024 presidential campaign, his administration has also introduced measures that make legal immigration more difficult.
These include expensive fees for certain work visas, adding to concerns among businesses, foreign workers and immigration advocates about the wider impact of the administration’s policies.
The latest visa revocation figures underscore the scale of the enforcement drive, as the administration continues to prioritise immigration restrictions while facing criticism over the impact on civil liberties and legal immigration pathways.
