US hits 10 Iranian targets as Tehran strikes US bases in Kuwait, Bahrain in fresh West Asia escalation
The US military launched a second consecutive day of strikes against Iran on Saturday, targeting 10 locations after accusing Tehran of attacking a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran responded with a missile and drone operation targeting US military facilities in Kuwait and Bahrain, raising fears of a fresh escalation in the Middle East conflict.
The latest confrontation comes despite an interim agreement between Washington and Tehran aimed at negotiating a broader deal to end the war.
The US Central Command said American aircraft struck Iranian military sites, including surveillance infrastructure, communication systems, air defence positions, drone storage facilities and mine-laying capabilities near the Strait of Hormuz.
The US said the operation followed an attack on the oil tanker Kiku, which was carrying more than two million barrels of crude oil through the strategic waterway. Washington accused Iranian forces of using a one-way drone to target the vessel and said Tehran had violated the ceasefire agreement.
“Commercial vessel transits through the Strait of Hormuz continue. US forces remain vigilant, lethal, and ready,” US Central Command said.
Trump warns Iran of further action
US President Donald Trump warned Iran that the country could face further military action if Washington is forced to resume operations, accusing Tehran of breaching the ceasefire.
“United States aircraft just struck Iranian missile and drone storage locations, and coastal radar sites, for violating the Cease Fire Agreement, AGAIN!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
He added that if the US was forced to “complete the job,” the Islamic Republic of Iran “will no longer exist.”
Iran retaliates with strikes on US bases
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) said Sunday that it carried out retaliatory strikes against US military sites in Kuwait and Bahrain.
The Guards claimed they had destroyed eight important US facilities, including locations at Kuwait’s Ali Al-Salem base and the Fifth Fleet naval base at Port Salman in Bahrain.
“Any enemy aggression, whatever the pretext, even against insignificant targets, will have a crushing response,” the IRGC said.
Iranian military officials warned that any further violation of the ceasefire would lead to a stronger response, while the IRGC Navy said US bases across the region would face severe consequences.
Peace talks continue
Meanwhile, Iran and the US are continuing negotiations on the terms of a possible peace agreement, including guarantees for safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz and discussions over Iran’s nuclear programme and enriched uranium stockpiles.
Under the interim arrangement, both sides have 60 days to finalize the details of a broader agreement.
