US Says It Struck Iranian Radar, Drone Sites After MQ-1 Drone Was Shot Down

The United States said on Sunday that it carried out what it described as “self-defense strikes” against Iranian military assets after Tehran allegedly shot down a US drone operating over international waters.

According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), American forces targeted radar installations, a drone ground-control station and two one-way attack drones at sites in Iran’s Goruk region and Qeshm Island over the weekend.

In a statement posted on X, CENTCOM said Iran had downed a US MQ-1 drone that was conducting operations over international waters. The US military responded with fighter aircraft strikes aimed at neutralising what it called Iranian air defence and drone capabilities.

CENTCOM said the operation successfully eliminated the identified targets and added that no US military personnel were injured during the incident.

The latest exchange marks another escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran, which have traded military strikes in recent days.

Last week, Iran targeted a US air base after American forces conducted strikes on what a US official described as an Iranian drone operation near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

The fresh confrontation comes amid heightened regional tensions and growing concerns about the risk of a broader military escalation in the Gulf.
