‘Used ChatGPT’: Fadnavis Takes Dig at Opposition Ahead of Maharashtra Monsoon Session

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday took a jibe at the Opposition ahead of the state legislature’s Monsoon Session, claiming that a memorandum submitted by opposition parties appeared to have been prepared using artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT.

Addressing a press conference before the three-week session, Fadnavis criticized Opposition leaders for skipping the traditional high-tea meeting held before the session and instead submitting a six-page memorandum highlighting their concerns.

He said the meeting could have provided an opportunity for discussions and exchange of ideas between the government and Opposition.

Taking aim at the memorandum, Fadnavis said he checked its contents and suspected it had been generated using AI.

“When I saw this letter, I had a slight suspicion, so I checked. Then I realised that this letter was also prepared using ChatGPT,” he said, adding that the Opposition appeared to have run short of issues and creativity.

However, the Chief Minister added a lighter note, saying it was positive that the Opposition had started adopting new technology. He said AI would play an important role in the future and congratulated them for using it.

The remarks came ahead of what is expected to be a heated Monsoon Session, with Opposition parties likely to raise issues including farmers’ concerns, governance and implementation of welfare schemes.

Fadnavis also alleged that the Opposition was repeatedly raising issues that had already been discussed and resolved by the government, claiming some parts of the latest memorandum were similar to previous submissions.

Farm loan waiver and monsoon concerns

The Chief Minister also defended Maharashtra’s farm loan waiver programme, saying it was not a political measure but an effort to help farmers regain access to formal credit.

He said around 56 lakh farmers would benefit from the ₹36,585 crore loan waiver package, describing it as the largest such initiative in the state.

Addressing concerns over delayed rainfall and possible El Nino impact, Fadnavis said Maharashtra was facing a difficult situation due to a significant rainfall deficit in several regions.

He said rainfall levels were far below average in Vidarbha, central Maharashtra and Konkan, and urged farmers to begin sowing only after receiving sufficient rainfall.

The Chief Minister said the government was closely monitoring water storage levels and had restricted certain agricultural water usage to protect drinking water supplies if monsoon delays continued.

The Maharashtra Legislature’s Monsoon Session is scheduled to begin on June 22.
