Udhayanidhi Stalin detained over alleged remarks on Trisha Krishnan after TVK, NCW complaints

DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin was detained on Tuesday after Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) lodged complaints with the police and the National Commission for Women (NCW) over his alleged remarks about actor Trisha Krishnan during a public meeting in Thanjavur.

The complaint was filed by S. Bairavi, TVK’s Central District Women’s Wing organiser for Thanjavur, at the Thanjavur East Police Station. Police also deployed heavy security outside the residence where Stalin was staying in the city.

The controversy stems from a public meeting on the Cauvery water dispute, where a section of the audience reportedly chanted “Trisha, Trisha” while Udhayanidhi Stalin was speaking.

He briefly paused and remarked, “Whether the water reaches anywhere else or not, it should reach there,” before clarifying that he was referring to the Cauvery.

However, TVK alleged that the remark was obscene and carried a double meaning directed at the actor.

In its complaint, the party accused Stalin and the DMK’s IT wing of insulting women and causing mental distress to Trisha Krishnan and women in general. It also alleged that the DMK deliberately circulated a video of the incident on social media.

TVK national spokesperson Pazha Selvakumar separately approached the National Commission for Women in New Delhi, seeking action over the alleged remarks.

The controversy triggered sharp political reactions, with TVK leaders Aadhav Arjuna and N. Anand condemning the DMK’s conduct as “absolutely disgusting” and accusing the ruling party of reflecting a deteriorating political culture.

Tamil Nadu BJP chief spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy also criticised Udhayanidhi Stalin, calling the alleged remarks “disgusting, obscene, vulgar and shameful” and demanding his arrest.
