India Rolls Out e-Group Visa For Cruise Tourists, Easing Entry For Foreign Travellers

India is rolling out a dedicated e-Group Visit Visa (Cruise) for foreign tourists arriving in the country aboard cruise vessels, in a move aimed at simplifying entry procedures and strengthening India’s position as a global cruise tourism destination.

The new visa facility is meant for foreign tourist groups travelling on cruise ships that follow a fixed and predetermined itinerary. According to details released by the government, the initiative is part of wider efforts to make travel to India more seamless and attract more international cruise passengers.

30-day visa with multiple entries

The new e-Group Visit Visa (Cruise) will be valid for 30 days and allow multiple entries into India. This is particularly useful for cruise itineraries that may include more than one Indian port, allowing passengers to leave and re-enter the country during the validity period.

The facility will be available to nationals of the 172 countries currently eligible for India’s e-Tourist Visa, according to the latest details reported on the scheme.

Foreign cruise passengers holding the dedicated visa will be able to enter India through 38 designated seaports enabled for e-visa entry. These include major cruise gateways such as Mumbai, Cochin, Mormugao, Chennai and New Mangalore, among others.

Cruise operators to streamline applications

Unlike the standard individual tourist e-Visa process, the new group facility is designed to simplify applications for cruise passengers travelling together.

Under the proposed system, the cruise operator or its authorised agent will submit passenger details collectively, rather than requiring every traveller to complete a separate application. Information is expected to include passengers’ names, nationalities and passport details.

The move is expected to reduce administrative hurdles for cruise companies and passengers while making immigration procedures more efficient at Indian ports.

Part of wider cruise tourism push

The e-Group Visit Visa is one of several measures India has introduced to promote cruise tourism. The government’s Maritime India Vision 2030 initiatives include upgraded international cruise terminals, destination task forces, QR-based immigration clearance and digitised customs procedures.

India has also expanded the network of ports through which foreign e-visa holders can enter the country. In August, the government notified 11 additional international ports, taking the total number of e-visa entry points to 88, including 37 airports, 38 seaports and 13 land ports.

The government has set an ambitious target of increasing cruise calls at Indian ports, with Maritime India Vision 2030 identifying cruise tourism as an important area for growth.

What it means for cruise travellers

For international tourists, the dedicated group visa could make visiting India as part of a cruise itinerary considerably easier. A streamlined group application process, multiple-entry validity and access to a wider network of e-visa-enabled seaports could make Indian destinations more attractive to global cruise operators.

The initiative also comes as India seeks to position its coastline and ports as part of major international cruise itineraries, potentially bringing more foreign visitors to destinations across the country’s east and west coasts.

The e-Group Visit Visa (Cruise) has been introduced as a policy measure, although the latest reports indicate that the dedicated service is still being operationalised and is not yet available through the regular official e-Visa portal.
