Superstar Rajinikanth’s latest release, Jailer 2, is emerging as a major box-office phenomenon, with veteran film distributor Tiruppur Subramaniam predicting that the Nelson Dilipkumar directorial could cross the Rs 1,000 crore mark worldwide. If the prediction materialises, the film would become the first Tamil-language movie to achieve the milestone, setting a new benchmark for the industry.

According to Subramaniam, the Rajinikanth-starrer had already collected more than Rs 755 crore worldwide at the time of his assessment and continued to attract audiences during its third week in theatres. He is optimistic that the film’s strong theatrical performance could help it reach the historic Rs 1,000 crore target.

Speaking about the film’s commercial prospects, Subramaniam said he expected it to surpass the existing Tamil Nadu distributor share record of Rs 117 crore, held by Vijay’s Leo.

“I believe the movie will achieve Rs 1,000 crore,” the veteran distributor said.

Comedy and Action Combination Drives Jailer 2’s Success

Explaining the reasons behind the film’s strong performance, Subramaniam credited director Nelson for successfully combining comedy with action.

He said one of the biggest strengths of Jailer 2 was its ability to bring back the entertainment style that made several of Rajinikanth’s earlier films successful.

Referring to classics such as Annamalai, Padayappa, Sivaji and Chandramukhi, Subramaniam pointed out that comedy had always played an important role in the superstar’s blockbuster films.

He also criticised the growing tendency in Tamil cinema to focus excessively on violence and action while giving less importance to humour.

According to him, Nelson understood the importance of Rajinikanth’s comic timing and successfully incorporated it into the sequel. He particularly praised actor Namo Narayanan’s comic performance, saying audiences had responded enthusiastically to his scenes.

Subramaniam believes the film’s combination of action, humour and entertainment has helped attract not only Rajinikanth’s fans but also family audiences to theatres.

Family Audiences Boost Theatrical Performance

The distributor identified the return of family audiences as another important factor behind Jailer 2‘s box-office success.

He observed that audiences were visiting cinemas with their families, helping the film maintain strong footfalls beyond its initial fan-driven opening.

Subramaniam also expressed confidence that the film would continue performing well through the Diwali festive period. He noted that festival holidays generally attract additional moviegoers, including people who do not regularly visit theatres.

Despite concerns that rainfall could affect cinema attendance, he said the weather had not significantly impacted the film’s collections.

He also expects the movie to maintain a lengthy theatrical run, with around 100 multiplex screens potentially continuing to screen it even after the arrival of other festive releases.

Jailer 2 Could Break Leo’s Tamil Nadu Record

Apart from its worldwide collection, Jailer 2 is also targeting a major milestone in the Tamil Nadu theatrical market.

Subramaniam believes the film could surpass the distributor share record of Rs 117 crore currently held by Vijay-starrer Leo.

Achieving this would further strengthen Rajinikanth’s position in the state’s box-office history and establish a new benchmark for Tamil cinema.

The distributor has also reportedly urged production house Sun Pictures to consider postponing the film’s digital release to allow it to continue benefiting from theatrical demand.

Strong Cast and Nelson-Rajinikanth Reunion Add to the Buzz

Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, Jailer 2 is the sequel to Rajinikanth’s 2023 blockbuster Jailer. The film brings back several familiar faces, including Ramya Krishnan, Mohanlal, Shivarajkumar, Vinayakan, Mirnaa and Yogi Babu.

The sequel also features actors such as Jackie Shroff, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Jatin Sarna, among others. Anirudh Ravichander has returned as the music composer.

The reunion of Rajinikanth and Nelson, along with the return of popular characters and special appearances, has helped generate considerable audience interest.

Tamil Cinema Enjoys a Strong Year

Subramaniam also described 2026 as a positive year for Tamil cinema, despite a relatively slow beginning.

He highlighted the success of films such as Thaai Kizhavi and Karuppu, noting that both big-budget productions and smaller films have managed to attract audiences.

According to him, the industry’s recent performance demonstrates that viewers are increasingly prioritising good content rather than simply following star power.

With Jailer 2 continuing its theatrical run and its worldwide collection already crossing Rs 755 crore at the time of the distributor’s comments, expectations surrounding the Rs 1,000 crore milestone have increased.

However, the Rs 1,000 crore figure remains a projection by the distributor rather than a confirmed box-office achievement.
