Gastroenterologist Reveals 4 Warning Signs of Liver Damage You Shouldn’t Ignore

In a video shared on Instagram on February 12, gastroenterologist and liver specialist Dr. Joseph Salhab outlined the early warning signs of liver damage—urging viewers to pay close attention, especially to the first symptom.

“These signs can indicate serious liver issues,” Dr. Salhab emphasized. “And some should prompt immediate medical attention.”

Here are the four major signs he shared:


1. Yellowing of Skin and Eyes

One of the most serious and visible signs of liver damage is jaundice, or scleral icterus—the yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes.

“This is not something to brush off. It should definitely prompt you to get seen by your nearest healthcare provider,” Dr. Salhab warned.


2. Swollen or Bloated Belly

Persistent abdominal bloating or a visibly swollen belly could indicate ascites—fluid buildup in the abdomen caused by liver dysfunction.

“When the liver isn’t working properly, fluid can accumulate not just in the belly, but also in the legs,” he explained.


3. Ongoing Nausea and Vomiting

Chronic nausea and vomiting—especially after alcohol consumption—can be a red flag. If you’re unable to keep food down or feel persistently unwell, it might be more than just an upset stomach.

“If this happens often, particularly after drinking, it’s time to take it seriously,” said Dr. Salhab.


4. Persistent Pain in the Right Upper Abdomen

Discomfort or ongoing pain in the upper right side of your belly may point to hepatitis—liver inflammation caused by infections, alcohol abuse, or other toxins.

“This kind of pain that just won’t go away could mean your liver is inflamed,” he said.


What Causes Liver Damage?

Dr. Salhab also shared several common causes of liver damage and inflammation:

  • Alcohol poisoning

  • Fatty liver disease leading to scarring and cirrhosis

  • Viral infections like hepatitis A, B, and C

  • Medications, supplements, and toxins

  • Autoimmune conditions such as autoimmune hepatitis, PBC, and PSC


Doctor’s Advice: Protect Your Liver

“Take care of your liver by watching what you put in your body and getting regular check-ups,” Dr. Salhab advised.

He also shared three foods he eats every morning to support gut and liver health:

  • Berries

  • Coffee
