Bihar MLC Polls Deliver Major Upsets as Jan Suraaj Opens Account, RJD Unseats BJP Veteran
The Patna, Tirhut and Darbhanga teachers’ constituencies witnessed major upsets on Wednesday as results for four of Bihar’s eight Legislative Council seats were declared. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) defeated five-term BJP MLC Nawal Kishore Yadav, while the Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) secured its first seat in the Bihar Legislative Council.
The BJP, RJD and JSP won one seat each, while an Independent candidate emerged victorious in the fourth constituency.
In the Darbhanga teachers’ constituency, JSP candidate Suresh Rai defeated former Bihar Congress president and two-time MLC Madan Mohan Jha. The victory marked a significant breakthrough for Prashant Kishor’s party, which entered the Legislative Council for the first time.
The Patna teachers’ constituency also delivered a surprise result, with RJD candidate Dr Sanjeev Kumar defeating BJP veteran Nawal Kishore Yadav. Kumar, a former Janata Dal (United) MLA, had joined the RJD ahead of the Assembly elections. The result represents a setback for the BJP and a boost for the opposition party.
In the Tirhut teachers’ constituency, BJP candidate Narendra Prasad Singh defeated sitting CPI MLC Sanjay Singh. Independent candidate Bhushan Kumar Jha finished second.
Meanwhile, in the Patna graduates’ constituency, JD(U) chief spokesperson Neeraj Kumar was leading against RJD candidate Dilip Rai. JSP nominee Anuj Singh, who was backed by Mokama MLA Anant Singh, was in third place. Anant Singh was recently expelled from the JD(U) over alleged anti-party activities.
Polling was held across four graduates’ constituencies—Patna, Darbhanga, Tirhut and Kosi—and four teachers’ constituencies—Patna, Darbhanga, Tirhut and Saran.
