Cristiano Ronaldo breaks silence on retirement after sister’s ‘last dance’ remark
Cristiano Ronaldo has responded to growing speculation about his future, saying he has not yet decided whether the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the final tournament of his career.
Speaking after Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Croatia in the Round of 32 on Friday, the 41-year-old said he would make a decision only after the tournament concludes.
“I don’t make reckless decisions. I will decide after the tournament, not now,” Ronaldo said.
The retirement debate intensified after his sister, Katia Aveiro, suggested earlier this week that the expanded 48-team World Cup would be the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s “last dance.”
However, Ronaldo neither confirmed nor dismissed the suggestion, insisting he remains focused on Portugal’s campaign.
Portugal advanced to the Round of 16 after edging Croatia and will next face Spain.
Sister calls it Ronaldo’s ‘last dance’
Ahead of the Croatia match, Katia urged football fans to cherish Ronaldo’s remaining years on the pitch.
“Enjoy it while it lasts. It’s ending soon. The information I have, from a reliable source… this is his last dance,” she told Sport TV.
She also defended her brother against his critics, highlighting his remarkable longevity at the highest level.
“For intelligent people, those who like football, they have to like Ronaldo. They are the ones who end up losing out. He has been dominating for more than 20 years,” she said.
Ronaldo scores first World Cup knockout goal
Ronaldo played a decisive role in Portugal’s victory, scoring from the penalty spot to level the match after Croatia had taken the lead.
The strike was his first-ever goal in the knockout stages of a FIFA World Cup and his third of the ongoing tournament.
Despite his contribution, Portugal coach Roberto Martinez substituted Ronaldo in the 81st minute with the score tied at 1-1.
The tactical change proved decisive as Gonçalo Ramos scored the winner shortly after coming on.
Croatia thought they had forced extra time with a late equaliser, but the goal was ruled out for offside, allowing Portugal to secure a hard-fought place in the Round of 16.
Following the match, Ronaldo was seen wearing a jersey bearing the name of the late Diogo Jota, as July 3 marked one year since the Portugal forward’s death.
