In a conversation with HT Lifestyle, Twincy Ann Sunil, dietitian and nutritionist with a Bachelor’s in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics at Apollo Spectra Hospital, Bangalore, broke down the science behind protein’s role in body transformation.

According to Sunil, consuming protein after a workout enhances Muscle Protein Synthesis (MPS)—a process where the body repairs and builds muscle fibers. “This is critical for muscle recovery and development,” she explained.

Protein also supplies the body with essential amino acids, particularly leucine, which plays a key role in stimulating MPS and muscle repair. These amino acids are primarily found in animal-based foods such as dairy, eggs, and meat.

  • Faster Recovery & Reduced Soreness: Adequate protein supports muscle recovery, reduces post-workout soreness, and helps you maintain a consistent training routine.

  • Boosted Metabolism: Protein has the highest Thermic Effect of Food (TEF)—the number of calories your body burns to digest and process food. This means your metabolism runs faster compared to when digesting fats or carbohydrates.

  • Appetite Control: Increased protein intake helps suppress ghrelin, the hunger hormone, which leads to improved satiety and reduced cravings or overeating.

“Protein plays a fundamental role not just in muscle building, but also in fat reduction, bone health, and cellular function,” said Sunil. She emphasized that individuals aiming to sculpt their physique should prioritize protein in their diet. “It should form a significant portion of your meal plan,” she added.
