Maharashtra Opposition seeks probe into ministers linked to ‘godman’ Ashok Kharat arrested for rape
The Opposition on Saturday demanded action against Maharashtra leaders, including ministers, allegedly linked to self-styled godman Ashok Kharat, who has been arrested on rape charges. The demand came a day after Rupali Chakankar resigned as chairperson of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women.
The Opposition Shiv Sena (UBT) has sought that Chakankar, who headed a trust run by Kharat, be made a co-accused in the case, citing her alleged links to him. Kharat is said to have connections with several politicians, business figures, and celebrities.
Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar said Chakankar’s resignation has been forwarded to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for acceptance.
Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray criticised the state government, saying those tasked with enforcing anti-superstition laws were themselves associated with Kharat. He called for action not only against Kharat but also against his “political devotees.”
Party leader Aaditya Thackeray said photographs of several ministers with Kharat have surfaced and demanded an inquiry, urging that those found linked be removed from the cabinet.
Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar said Chakankar’s resignation was insufficient and called for scrutiny of call records of ministers seen with Kharat, alleging the godman had amassed significant wealth with political backing.
State minister Sanjay Shirsat termed the case a “taint” on Maharashtra, while adding that the probe is ongoing and appropriate action will be taken.
