Laljit Singh Bhullar resigned as Punjab’s transport and jails minister shortly after his alleged link to a suicide case surfaced, with police subsequently registering an FIR against him and his father on charges of abetment of suicide.

Bhullar stepped down from the Aam Aadmi Party government on Saturday after being named in connection with the alleged suicide of a district manager of the Punjab State Warehousing Corporation in Amritsar.

The deceased, identified as Gagandeep Singh Randhawa, allegedly consumed a poisonous substance and, in a video circulated on social media, claimed he took the extreme step due to fear and harassment linked to Bhullar.

According to Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, an FIR has been registered against the minister, his father Sukhdev Singh Bhullar, and another aide under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to abetment of suicide.

The case was filed at Ranjit Avenue police station under the Amritsar Police Commissionerate late Saturday night, hours after the incident triggered widespread political backlash.

Bhullar’s exit makes him the third minister in the Bhagwant Mann-led government to resign over criminal or ethical allegations.

Opposition leaders intensified pressure on the government, with former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi demanding a CBI probe, while Bikram Singh Majithia called for an independent and fair investigation to ensure justice for the victim.
