Satya Niketan PG Collapse: 5 Dead, ABVP-NSUI Workers Clash At Rescue Site

The death toll in the Delhi building collapse rose to five on Sunday after another injured student succumbed at AIIMS, following the collapse of a multi-storey PG building in Satya Niketan. Rescue operations are underway as authorities fear around 40-50 students may still be trapped under the rubble.

Teams from the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Civil Defence and other agencies are conducting rescue operations on a “war footing”, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said.

At least 11 students have so far been rescued and shifted to nearby hospitals. Two students admitted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre are in critical condition, the hospital said.

Delhi Police said it received a PCR call about the incident at South Campus Police Station at around 1:34 pm.

A police official at the spot said a preliminary inquiry suggested that around 40-50 students were inside the building when it collapsed.

Locals said the structure was a boys’ paying guest accommodation. An eyewitness told news agency ANI that the five-storey building was known as “Hostel Daze” and operated as a dedicated boys’ PG.

“The adjacent building also collapsed. All the students in their rooms were trapped under the rubble,” the eyewitness said, adding that the exact number of people trapped would be known after authorities check the registration records.

The eyewitness said several students suffered serious injuries and that rescue teams were facing difficulties while attempting to pull them out from the debris.

Students living nearby said that because the incident occurred on a Sunday, many residents were likely to have been inside the building at the time of the collapse.
