UN Security Council denounces ‘heinous and cowardly’ terror attack in Pakistan’s Swat district

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Thursday strongly condemned the suicide bombing outside a police station in Kabal, Swat district of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, describing it as a “heinous and cowardly” terrorist attack.

The bombing, carried out on August 2, claimed the lives of at least 16 Pakistani nationals, most of them civilians, and left dozens injured. The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for the attack.

In a press statement, the 15-member Security Council expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and to the government and people of Pakistan, while wishing a speedy recovery to those wounded.

The attack is part of a broader surge in militant violence in Pakistan’s northwestern region, where the TTP has repeatedly targeted security personnel and police installations in recent years.

Reaffirming that terrorism in all its forms remains one of the gravest threats to international peace and security, the Council stressed that such acts are criminal and unjustifiable regardless of their motive, location or perpetrators.

The UNSC called for those responsible for planning, financing, organising and carrying out the attack to be brought to justice, urging all countries to cooperate with Pakistan in accordance with international law and relevant Security Council resolutions.

The Council also reiterated the responsibility of all states to combat terrorism through lawful means and in line with the UN Charter and international legal obligations to safeguard global peace and security.
