Want to lose weight without counting calories? Fitness coach shares 4 simple habits that work

Tracking every calorie can feel exhausting, but fitness coach Vanja, who posts on Instagram as Vanja Moves, says weight loss doesn’t have to involve constant food logging. In a recent post, she shared four practical habits that can naturally help create a calorie deficit without counting calories.

1. Prioritise protein and vegetables

Instead of obsessing over numbers, Vanja recommends ensuring every meal includes a quality source of protein and plant-based foods. Protein and fibre help keep you full for longer, making it easier to avoid overeating.

2. Eat within a fixed time window

Vanja suggests limiting meals to a set eating window, not because intermittent fasting is “magic,” but because having fewer hours to eat makes it harder to consume excess calories through frequent snacking.

3. Eliminate liquid calories

Sugary drinks, specialty coffees, fruit juices and alcohol can add significant calories without keeping you full. Replacing them with water or unsweetened beverages can substantially reduce overall calorie intake.

4. Walk for 10 minutes after meals

A short walk after eating can improve digestion, help regulate post-meal blood sugar levels and increase daily physical activity without requiring lengthy workouts.

Focus on sustainable habits

Rather than relying on calorie-tracking apps or weighing every meal, Vanja advocates building simple, repeatable habits that support long-term weight management. She says focusing on adequate protein, responding to hunger cues and staying active can make healthy eating more sustainable while supporting fitness and recovery.

While these habits can be effective for many people, individual calorie needs vary. Those with medical conditions or specific nutritional goals may benefit from consulting a healthcare professional or registered dietitian for personalised advice.
